Why write a killer?

Murder is not who someone is, it's something they have done. Murder and things like that, such as grave injury, do not receive justice, one can not be brought back from the dead. It is often a heinous and selfish act. The sad truth is that 80% of all inmates will eventually return to society either as a free man or under supervision. If you lock a human in a cell with no “normal” relationships, you can not expect them to not bring the prison mindset with them.

I do not believe your intent should be romantic, but don't take our word for it, start watching Love After Lock Up on TLC to see how fraught with issues those relationships can be.

If you are easily manipulated, this may not be the activity for you to give back to the community. There is a culture of manipulation in prison to gain money while incarcerated. The inmates call folks they con tricks. Be upfront that you will not be putting money on their books for them. If they still want to maintain a friendship, you'll know they are sincere. If they are not, you will get sob stories and at the end typically an angry letter crafted to hurt you to the highest degree. It happens. These inmates have not be vetted by us but simply appear on the show, “Murder Comes to Town”.

Be discrete about your personal information and life details until you have been in contact for a long time. While many of these inmates are serving life sentences, not all are. If you have a PO Box, use it. We have written many inmates for years using our home address with no issues.

Assume nothing about the person you are writing. While it's important that you know what they are in prison for, none of these inmates are innocent. They have either been found guilty or plead guilty to the charges for which they are serving time. You can feel free to contact us via the menu on the right hand side if you have questions.
